BEYZA BARAN MSc
Beyza Baran is an industrial design and IP specialist with eight years of experience as an intellectual property technology transfer expert. Currently serving as the IP & Commercialisation Manager at the University of Strathclyde, Beyza collaborates with academics and researchers to assess opportunities for commercialization. Her role involves evaluating the strategic fit of potential licensing opportunities, providing support to inventors in business formation, legal matters, shareholder agreements, and securing funding.
Before venturing into technology transfer, Beyza pursued a career as a designer, working on diverse projects, from fish farms to small living spaces. In 2016, she co-founded a Biomedical Tech company focused on a patent-pending oral cancer diagnostic device, gaining valuable entrepreneurial skills and knowledge through this experience.
Beyza’s involvement in the industrial design society in Turkey, where she served as Vice-Chair for six years, allowed her to contribute as a jury member in various design awards. She also held the position of Design Manager at Ege University’s design center, PROTELYE, where she assisted inventors and entrepreneurs in seeking investment opportunities from business angels and startup competitions, resulting in significant achievements, including spin-outs, startup awards, and patent applications.
In 2018, Beyza moved to Glasgow to pursue a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Technology. During her studies, she engaged in numerous entrepreneurial activities and events, gaining exposure to the local SME and startup ecosystem. This exposure led to her collaboration with an academic researcher to commercialize their invention.
Beyza’s journey has reinforced her resilience, improved her commercial awareness and creative thinking skills, and honed her abilities in relationship management. Her blend of academic knowledge and hands-on entrepreneurial experiences has equipped her with valuable transferable skills, ultimately leading to her current role.
